The Most Important Job in the World

The actual holiday of Mother's Day celebrates its 105th birthday today, having been "invented" by Anna Jarvis in a small Methodist church in West Virginia, on May 10, 1908. Within a few years the state of West Virginia had declared it an official holiday, and by 1914 Congress followed with a declaration signed by President Woodrow Wilson. Soon thereafter, I'm sure, Hallmark recognized the opportunity for some serious profit and that's when Mother's Day really took off.
Today, people from all over the world visit the International Mother's Day Shrine at the restored Methodist church where Miss Jarvis first began the day to, as she wrote in 1908, "brighten the lives of good mothers. To have them know we appreciate them, though we do not often show it as we might."
That's still a worthy goal for Mother's Day more than a century later, to "brighten the lives" of mothers and "have them know we appreciate them."
Of course, sometimes motherhood does get a little crazy. Why do you think moms come up with some of the weird things they say? Like...
  • "What were you thinking? Answer me when I'm talking to you....Don't talk back to me!"
  • "When that lawn mower cuts off your toes, don't come running to me!"
  • "Make sure you wear clean underwear, in case you're in an accident."
  • "Will you look at the dirt on the back of your neck!"
  • "Shut your mouth, and eat your supper!"
  • "If I've told you once, I've told you a million times: Don't exaggerate!!!"
  • "Keep crying, and I'll give you something to cry about!"
  • "I brought you into this world, and I can take you out!"
  • "One day you'll have kids, and I hope they turn out just like you!"
To the many of you in our church family who are mothers, please know that you are very much appreciated. May the Lord Himself brighten your day this Sunday (and all through the year) with the satisfaction that you are making an incredible impact for His kingdom.

May He bless you as you perform "the most important job in the world"...and may your kids turn out just like you!
